Why You'll Love It

Pablo Alvarez, current owner of Vega Sicilia, is a patient man. In 1999, Álvarez discovered that faulty corks had tainted some wines. He recalled the wine at a cost of millions of euros, and then began planting cork trees on the property. They now cover 75 acres; decades from now, they may supply corks for the estate’s wine. He is a perfectionist. Vega Sicilia has a history over 150 years and in the last 30 years, Alvarez and his family have taken the estate and the Ribera del Duero region to great heights. Álvarez has become a leader of Spain’s modern wine revolution-investing heavily in vineyards and wineries and in painstaking experimentation. Few Spanish wineries have changed so much and so dramatically in the last 20 years to continue making old-style wines, without losing the inner qualities that make their wines so unique.

Its flagship wine has always been labeled Unico (“unique”). This wine is renowned for its age worthiness. Often compared to many of first growth Bordeaux wines that command much higher prices. Out of the nearly 1,000 hectares that make up the Vega Sicilia estate, 210 are used to grow vines and only 40 are used to produce Unico; the rest source grapes for Valbuena and Alion. ''There is an almost magic element in the estate, something very special that one can see it starting from the berry weight, in Unico it is 1.6 grams while in Pintia (sister winery in Toro) it is 2 grams'. On average these wines are aged for 10 years between wood and bottle before release. The 2006 vintage was aged for 12 years, it was actually released after the 2007 and 2008. Produced from 94% Tinto Fino, 6% Cabernet. The vintage itself was relatively easy and this tranquility is somehow evident in the glass. The balance and harmony is exquisite, very concentrated yet elegant and velvety texture.
