Why you’ll love it:

Two brothers, Alessandro and Gian Natale Fantino, run this family estate. Alessandro manages the vineyards and has previously worked for Bartolo Mascarello for 22 years before focusing on his own wines. The wines are produced from vines over 20 years old located in Bussia.

Bussia is a sub-region of Monforte d’Alba in Barolo, but it's a very large region that goes from the town of Monforte d’Alba in the very south of the Barolo region up to somewhere in between the town of Barolo and the town of Castiglione-Falletto. Due to its size, the wines from Bussia can vary quite a lot depending on the soil exposition.

The Fantino holdings are concentrated exclusively in the “Dardi” section of Bussia, a hillside with perfect southern and southeastern exposure in the geographic centre of Bussia. The Barolos from Dardi aren't as hard as those produced from the southside of Montforte or Serralunga. Whilst this makes them approachable now, it doesn't preclude them from long time ageing.

Hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts. Fermentation lasts 18 - 25 days for all wines and occurs for most of the wines in open wood casks. The Barolo is aged in large, Slavonian oak barrels that range in age from 1 to 15 years old for 4 years & sees a further 6 months in bottle before release.

Tastes Like?

Powerful wine with great intensity and concentration. On the nose loads of crunchy red fruits, potpurri, dried rose petals, dark cherries and a hint of spice. Palate is medium bodied with silky tannins, rustic & dusty, cherries, red fruits, wild herbs, earthy and a hint of orange peel with a delightful long finish.
